IEA Bioenergy Task 36 at ICERA 2025 – International Conference on Circular Economy, Renewable Energies and Green Hydrogen in Africa
Even though Africa is blessed with resources, access to electricity and modern energy fuels is still a big concern. ICERA brings various stakeholders yearly together to address the issues and help to find solutions through international networks.
IEA Bioenergy Task 36 Germany NTL in his activities has hosted ”ICERA 2025 – The third International Conference on Circular Economy, Renewable Energies and Green Hydrogen in Africa” in Windhoek, Namibia from 21 to 25 October 2025. The main aim of the conference is propagation of transition towards green sustainable future for Africa. The conference has gathered delegates from 28 countries working with focus of Africa.
The conference strengthens the international networking of the faculty in the field of sustainable circular and energy systems. ICERA 2025 offered a multidisciplinary exchange platform for research, industry, politics and civil society. The focus was on the circular economy, waste recycling, biomass utilization, renewable energies, green hydrogen, sustainable biofuels, energy access as well as regulatory and socio-economic issues of the energy transition. In seven scientific sessions as well as poster and networking formats, current developments in Africa were presented and new collaborations were initiated. Many contributions highlighted the importance of innovative recycling strategies, from biogenic residues to complex waste streams, and showed the connection between research and practical solutions. For African countries, the development of sustainable energy and resource systems plays a central role in coping with energy demand, urbanisation and raw material dependencies. ICERA makes an important contribution to this and promotes cross-regional cooperation. The approaches discussed also provide valuable impetus for projects at the University of Rostock, especially in the areas of waste-to-energy, green hydrogen, biomass use and circular economy. They show that the circular economy and energy innovation can only succeed together. The excursion to the Cleanergy and Daures Green Hydrogen Village made it clear that the energy transition in Africa is already taking shape. ICERA will remain a central source of inspiration for research, policy and practice in the future and will further strengthen the international visibility of the University of Rostock.
