BBEST and IEA BIOENERGY CONFERENCE 2024 (22nd-24th of October 2024)

Task 36 also joined the BBEST & IEA Bioenergy Conference held in Brazil and participated in the session “Heat and power from biomass and waste” with the presentation “Towards a Dynamic Understanding of Waste-to-Energy Futures”.

The BBEST – IEA Bioenergy Conference was held in October in São Paolo, bringing together researchers from around the world.

BBEST – IEA Bioenergy Conference 2024 counted with a scientific and policy agenda that covered all facets of bioenergy, from success cases and lessons learned to new technologies, bioproducts, sustainability, environmental impacts, and social development. Topics of interest encompass the wide range of feedstock, including wastes, that can be turned into bioenergy, using conventional and novel technologies. The Conference also highlighted bioenergy fit for road, air, and sea transport as well as bioelectricity and biogas.

The Conference Program included keynote lectures by renowned speakers, plenary and parallel sessions for scientists and companies to present and discuss original research on different topics, and space for students to show their projects.

Mar Edo (NTL for Sweden and Task 36 leader) participated in the session “Heat and power from biomass and waste” with a short talk with title “Towards a Dynamic Understanding of Waste-to-Energy Futures” on behalf of Task 36.  Mar presented System Dynamics (SD) modeling as a tool to support an improve understanding of how decisions taken today around the Waste-to-energy system can impact the plausibility of achieving future goals or assess the potential lock-in effects of large infrastructure investments aimed at decarbonizing the energy grid.  An example of this is being carried over in project called WECOS: WtE in Sweden’s Circular Economy- Collaborative System Dynamics Modelling.

In addition, the Conference organized a study tour to Iracema Sugarcane Mill where the participants could get either an industrial tour visiting the sugarcane reception and crushing, automatized processes, sugar crystallization, ethanol production, best management processes, bagasse and energy production, water use efficiency; or a more agronomic tour where they could learn about soil conservation and preparation, crop rotation, best management practices for high crop yields, use of residue, vinasse application, vinasse & fertilizer combined into organo-mineral formulations, biological pest management and control, mechanized harvest, vinasse digestion, forest recomposition, and other environment practices.
